The primary design challenge in this kitchen was to create a functional family space with seating for eight, traditional in style but holding hints of the home's former life - a schoolhouse.
The client requested adequate dishware and glass storage that could be displayed in a China hutch. A large 36" high wall cabinet with glass doors and lighting was specified to house and showcase dishware and glasses. A chief complaint in their current kitchen is that the dishwasher is too far from the sink; therefore, in the new plan, the dishwasher has been placed within 3' of the sink for ease in clean-up and loading. The sink has been placed such that the client can clean up after a meal while keeping on eye on the children in the TV area.
Seating for eight has been specified, as has seating for an additional three people at the peninsula. The surface at the peninsula has been specified at counter height so that the client's daughters can either watch or help her with her baking. This is also a great space for homework or after school snacks. A Caesarstone countertop in Calacatta Nuvo has been selected for its marble-like appearance; Caesarstone, however, does not stain and requires minimal maintenance.
As the kitchen sits in the interior of the home, a skylight has been included to bring natural light into the space.
With the proposed floor plan, the family can sit together for a meal while still having an open plan that will allow for entertaining. The TV area as well as the backyard are visible from both the dining table and the peninsula.
The colors and finishes are reminiscent of the home's old schoolhouse days, with the classic green of a blackboard used in the bench cushion and the decorative tile. The lighting chosen uses a traditional Edison-style bulb that is similar to those seen in a classroom science lab. The space has been kept light and bright with white cabinetry and pale gray walls.
All construction drawings were completed in AutoCAD, and renderings were created in 2020 Design.
